Sitting in bed as a kid playing James Cameron's Avatar: The Video Game or Drawn to Life or 999 or LEGO Batman, knowing deep down that the game isn't very good but pushing through anyway because god dammit you haven't played anything like it before and it's the only game you got for Christmas and you're determined to at least see the next level. Nobody was standing over the devs' shoulders telling them to make the combat easier, put in objective markers, balance the game properly, etc.įinally, on a personal note, this is a mid-budget DS game through and through, and it evoked a lot of nostalgia in me because of that. The beauty of the mid-tier jank game is thus: enough money to create ambition, and enough of a lack of oversight for that ambition to go largely unchecked. The design is weird and sometimes even obtuse, but the developers' vision is apparent, and it's fun to see their largely-unfiltered decisions on display. The game is the perfect encapsulation of what I love about the mid-tier jank of ten years ago, a genre and class of game that's largely disappeared in recent years. However, I enjoyed the hell out of my time with this game anyway. The gunplay is weak, the movement feels weird, the combat is shallow, the level and enemy design is often frustrating, and it's buggy as all hell. Nearly every negative review of this game is completely accurate.
